In celebration of Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood, Nevada State Parks is hosting a series of Dutch oven cook-offs throughout 2014 at state parks across Nevada. Winners from each cook-off will be invited to compete in a statewide final at Cathedral Gorge State Park on September 20, 2014. The grand prize will include a silver Nevada Sesquicentennial 150th Medallion. The cook-off series kicks off at Valley of Fire State Park on February 8. Participants are allowed unlimited entries with the public welcome to attend and sample authentic Dutch oven fare. The competition will have five categories: bread, dessert, main/dish/meat, side dish/vegetable, and “1860’s era recipes”. WHEN: Saturday, February 8. Cooking begins at 8 a.m. Judging will begin at 2:45 p.m. and end at approximately 4 p.m.
WHERE: Group Use Campground at 29450 Valley of Fire Road in Overton, 89040. Valley of Fire State Park is approximately 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15, exit 75.
WHO: This event is open to the public. Participants may enter as individuals or teams. Anyone entering under the age of 18 as an individual must provide a parent or guardian’s signature approval on their entry form.
COST: There is an entry fee of $5 per dish; no limit. There is no cost to attend the event; however, there is a per vehicle entrance fee of $10; Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.
