Nevada State Parks: Free events at Valley of Fire State Park in April 2012

Valley of Fire State Park is holding numerous free events in April. The park’s entrance fee is $10 per vehicle, but Nevada residents receive a $2 discount. For further information, contact the park directly at 702-397-2088 or vof@parks.nv.gov.
April 1: Atlatl Endurance Challenge

Join competitors from around the world to test your endurance in pursuing your prey. Competitors have the option to do  a one-mile fun run, a 5k (3.1 miles) run or a half-marathon (13 miles) trail route and end with a precision shoot out, to test their skills in the ancient hunting tactics. Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place in all three distances. A minimum of five participants is required in each distance. Participants must pre-register by calling 702-397-2088 or e-mailing vofranger2@mvdsl.com no later than 4:30 p.m. March 21.

WHEN: Sunday, April 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

WHERE: Participants will gather at the Atlatl picnic area. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 6: Full Moon Walk

Join a park ranger to explore the Atlatl Rock picnic area, look for scorpions and find some petroglyphs and tanks. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring enough water.

WHEN: Friday, April 6 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

WHERE: Participants will gather at site 31 in the Atlatl campground. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

 WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 7: Desert Blooms

Enjoy a slide program featuring Valley of Fire’s vegetation. We will identify the beautiful plants in bloom, and caravan with a park ranger to find some of the gorgeous blooms.

WHEN: Saturday, April 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Participants will gather at the visitor center. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 7 & 8: Ancient Art and Kids Activities

Join park staff for fun crafts, learn how to throw with an Atlatl, create your own petroglyph and many more fun activities.

 WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Participants will gather at site 31 in the Atlatl picnic area. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 8: Easter Hop

Meet the Easter Bunny as he hops around the park to hand out Easter treats. You might even be able to snag a picture with this furry friend.

WHEN: Sunday, April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: The Easter Bunny will hop around to the following locations at various times: Atlatl rock campground, Arch Rock campground, Group Use area, Atlatl Picnic area, Seven Sisters area, historic Conservation Corps cabins area and the Visitor Center. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 12-15: Clark County Fair

Visit park rangers from all over Southern Nevada at the Clark County Fair. They will be on hand to answer questions about all of Nevada’s wonderful state parks. See the following web site for more information on admission and ticket prices http://www.ccfair.com/.

WHEN: Thursday through Sunday, April 12 through April 15 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

WHERE: The Clark County Fair and Rodeo is located at 1301 West Whipple Avenue in Logandale, Nevada.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 21: 3rd Annual Valley of Fire Car Show

Join us for our Third Annual Classic Car Show that is open to pre-1985 classic vehicles. Music, food and a history display will complement the classic cars. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in three categories: Crowd Pleasers, Participant’s Choice, and Boy Scouts Choice.

WHEN: Saturday April 21from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and awards presented at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Shuttle service will be provided from the event’s parking area to the visitor center’s lower parking lot. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 22: Desert Blooms

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 28: Petroglyph Puzzle

Join a park ranger for a PowerPoint presentation focusing on Anasazi petroglyphs found in the park. We will discuss rock art classification, use specific glyphs found on the Atlatl Rock picnic area and Petroglyph Canyon panels to approximate dates. Finally, we will conclude with a survey of our own pictographs to help us build understanding in how truly difficult interpreting meaning is from these 700-plus-year-old rock carvings.

WHEN: Saturday April 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 11a.m. and 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHERE: Participants will gather at visitor center. The park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75.

WHO: The event is open to the public.

April 29: Petroglyph Puzzle
