The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) will hold public meetings regarding Mormon cricket and grasshopper management on Feb. 21, 2012 in Winnemucca and Elko, NV. The meetings will be held at the Cooperative Extension Office in Winnemucca at 11:00 a.m. and at the NDA office in Elko at 3:30 p.m. The NDA plans to use these meetings to obtain comments on the possible use of Dimilin®, malathion and 5 percent carbaryl bait to control Mormon cricket and grasshopper populations on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). BLM land includes districts in Carson City, Winnemucca, Elko, Ely and Battle Mountain.
This pesticide would be used for crop protection, residential protection and public safety. The NDA will also discuss public involvement in Mormon cricket control, including baiting programs. For directions to the meetings, copies of the Environmental Assessment, Pesticide Use Proposals and additional information, contact Jeff Knight, the entomologist at the NDA, at (775) 353-3767.
