June Events South Fork State Recreation Area

South Fork State Recreation Area will host several weekend presentation events in June. These events are open to the public. Seating is limited and is on a first-come first-serve basis. Presentations may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

June 7: Astronomy – Star Gazing
Through a guided tour, visitors will learn to identify various star constellations in the sky. High powered telescopes will be provided to observe planets, constellations, bright stars and the moon. A fun event for astronomers of all ages.
WHEN: Saturday, June 7 from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
WHERE: The park is located in Spring Creek, NV; traveling 7 miles South on Elko on SR 227, turn right on SR 288 (5.5 miles) and turn right Lower South Fork Road (travel 5 miles); turn right on Lucky Nugget Road. Take road approximately 6 miles and park at entrance of Fisherman’s Point.
WHO: Mr. Gerry Pennington from the Great Basin College will host this event.

June 14: The Birds of South Fork
From big birds like the bald eagle to smaller birds like the loon, learn about the many birds that call South Fork State Recreation Area home. The presentation will focus on how to identify birds and discuss their characteristic. Learn fascinating facts and gain a greater understanding of the birds at South Fork.
WHEN: Saturday, June 14 at 7 p.m.
WHERE: The park is located in Spring Creek, NV; traveling 7 miles South on Elko on SR 227, turn right on SR 288 (5.5 miles) and turn right Lower South Fork Road (travel 3.5 miles); enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.
WHO: Park Supervisor Robert Misiti will host the event.

June 21: Dutch Oven Cooking – Cobbler Pie
Learn how to make food in a Dutch oven. A cobbler pie will be made from scratch and the audience will be invited to taste it. Limited quantities will be available.
WHEN: Saturday, June 21 at 6 p.m.
WHERE: The park is located in Spring Creek, NV; traveling 7 miles South on Elko on SR 227, turn right on SR 288 (5.5 miles) and turn right Lower South Fork Road (travel 3.5 miles); enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.
WHO: Park Aid Paula Ault will host the event.

June 28: Land Animals of South Fork
Learn about jackrabbits, coyote, mule deer and other land animals at South Fork State Recreation Area. The presentation will focus on the animals’ characteristics so visitors will have a better appreciation of them when observed in their natural habitat.
WHEN: Saturday, June 28 at 7 p.m.
WHERE: The park is located in Spring Creek, NV; traveling 7 miles South on Elko on SR 227, turn right on SR 288 (5.5 miles) and turn right Lower South Fork Road (travel 3.5 miles); enter main entrance and go to top of East Campground.
WHO: South Fork State Recreation Area staff will host the event.
