2) Truckee Meadows Great Community Clean-Up
Each year thousands of volunteers venture out into Northern Nevada to remove illegally dumped trash and pull invasive weeds, making our open spaces safer and more beautiful for everyone who lives in, and visits, Washoe County. This year’s cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 10th with a volunteer appreciation picnic to follow at Bartley Ranch Regional Park.

3) The Spring Mountain Ranch Dutch Oven Cook Off
Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Nevada’s Statehood with a Dutch oven competition that will include prizes. Individuals and teams may enter dishes in more than one category. Entries fall under one of four main categories or one special category to celebrate Nevada’s 150th Anniversary: bread product, main course (meat), vegetable side-dish, dessert, and 150th anniversary category – 1860s style cooking all natural ingredients; no boxed/pre-made ingredients.

4) Vintage Vegas Food Tour
A Historic Food Tour in fabulous Downtown Las Vegas will feature five vintage restaurants that have been part of the Las Vegas community for at least 25 years.  Between tastings, a local tour guide will highlight architectural features, local culture, and historical facts that put Las Vegas on the map.

5)   Brownstone Canyon Archaeological District and Rock Art Hike
This half-day event begins at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitors’ Center at 8:00 a.m.  Tell attendant at kiosk that you are attending the archaeology month event so you will not be charged admission.  The hike is limited to 15 participants so register early and receive travel arrangements. We will travel to the trailhead in government vehicles and then hike ¾ of a mile to the rock art sites.  Bring water, snacks and a hat.  Wear boots or sturdy shoes with deep tread.  The hike is moderate.

6)  Nevada Anthropological Conference
The Nevada Anthropological Conference (NAC) is intended to explore the shared research interests of archaeologists, rock art scholars, anthropologists, and avocationalists.  The conference will highlight recent advances in archaeology and rock art studies that have complementary goals and ultimately strengthen the anthropological foundations of both disciplines.  There are two days of presentations, social events in the evening and field trips scheduled for Sunday.

7)  Parks: Past/Present Perspectives
The visual arts exhibition showcases 18 historical photographs, recreated to show the evolution of parks in the Truckee Meadows.  Short texts accompany each photograph to help connect citizens with our cultural history and develop sense of place.  The exhibition is a component of the Truckee Meadows Parks Rephotography Project, an initiative designed to engage citizens in a better stewardship of our parks.

8)  Lake Subdivision Walking Tour
Meander past divorce-trade dwellings and Victorian architecture and through one of Reno’s earliest subdivisions.  Tour includes a stop at the Lake Mansion.  Tour guide: Debbie Hinman.  Reservations are required and can be made at 775-747-4478 or www.historicreno.org.

9) BLM Elko District National Public Land Day
The first event takes place May 10 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Wild Horse Campground approximately 69 miles north of Elko along Mountain City Highway (HWY 225) across from Wildhorse Reservoir. Volunteers will paint and stain picnic tables, shade shelters and signs and repair kiosks. Afternoon events include a scavenger hunt and hike in the hills around the campground. Volunteers who worked during the day may stay overnight free and join us for a campfire and stargazing.
