I got to visit the Bighorn Mountains this summer and hike into the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. Wilderness areas are an essential protection for natural areas and provide us a chance to explore unaltered (mostly, usually) landscapes. On this day I ran into a family from the Midwest that comes west every summer to escape the heat and the flatness, and to fish. Later, sitting on a rock, a group of horse trekkers came by, but otherwise I had the whole vast mountains to myself.
The Wilderness Act, written by Howard Zahniser, was signed into law in 1964 and celebrated it's 50th birthday a few years ago! It created the National Wilderness Preserve system that allows for the designation of lands as wilderness. As the famous line from the Act says, "“Wilderness is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”
Wilderness provides the highest level of conservation protection for federal lands. It takes an act of Congress to get an area designated and/or to change the status of designation.
