BLM Seeks Comments on the Environmental Assessment for Horse Canyon?Cortez Unified Exploration Project
Battle Mountain, NV – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Mount Lewis Field Office is seeking public comments on the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Horse Canyon/Cortez Unified Exploration Project that would be located approximately 35 miles southeast of the community of Battle Mountain in Eureka and Lander counties, Nevada.
Barrick Gold Corporation, Inc. (Barrick) has submitted a Modification and Addendum to the Plan of Operations (PoO) (File Number: NVN-066621 (13-1A, 14-1A)) for the purpose of analyzing the environmental impacts of 159 acres of surface disturbance that exceeds the 250 acres of surface disturbance authorized under previous PoOs. The total exploration-related disturbance within the Project boundary is currently 409 acres. Barrick has also submitted an Amendment to the Plan of Operations (File Number: NVN-066621 (14-2A)) to increase the acreage of allowable surface disturbance within the Project area by 140 acres for a total of 549 acres. Exploration activities of the Proposed Project would include overland access, new road construction, geophysical analysis, trenching, test wells, monitoring wells, construction of exploration drill pads and sumps, and reclamation.
The comment period begins December 05, 2015 and ends January 05, 2015. Written comments received during this 30-day period will be considered during the decision-making process. The EA may be viewed at: http://on.doi.gov/1FU4B98 or a printed copy can be picked up at the Battle Mountain District Office at 50 Bastian Road, Battle Mountain, NV.
