The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District, along with the Washoe County Sherriff’s Office (WCSO) combined efforts in combating public dumping when an abandoned boat full of household trash was discovered in north Reno, in the Golden Valley area. Joint efforts between the BLM and WCSO proved effective with a suspect being identified through evidence acquired from the trash. The incident is currently under investigation.
WCSO and BLM officers have often worked jointly in the past few years investigating such incidents involving illegal dumping and abandoned property on public lands. The public should be aware that illegal dumping is a Federal Offense which carries a minimum of $525 with a maximum up to $1,000., and up to 12 months imprisonment for the first offense This penalty does not include costs for restitution.
